Summer in Kobe: Day 2

So day two had the main event of the weekend: the big fireworks show!
じゃ、二日目は週末のマインエベントの花火大会だった！


But that came later. Let's start at the beginning.
でも、それはあとで。始まりから始めよう。


We got up, and talked about what we wanted to do that day. Lunch and a few rented movies sounded good, so we headed out after spending a lazy morning sleeping in and chatting.
おきてから、何をしようかって話した。昼ごはんを食べたり、DVDを借りたりするのがよかったと思ったから、寝坊したり喋りしたり楽な朝の後で、私たちが出かけた。


We stopped at the Tsutaya (a common dvd/electronics store) and picked up two movies: Karigurashi Arietty and the second Narnia movie (Prince Caspian?). I also picked up a new pair of headphones, which I've been needing for a while now anyway.
ツタヤによって、DVDを二つ選んだ。宮崎の借り暮らしアリエティーとカスピアン王子。前からずっと買わなきゃと思ってから、ついでに新しいヘッドホンも買ったんだ。


Then it was food time. Yuri took me to this awesome little shop that had a special twist!
そして、食事の時間だった。ゆりちゃんがこの特別ないいところがある店に連れて行ってくれた！

The restaurant is called "Boku no Furai Pan" It's written all in hiragana, which is unusual for imported words such as "furai pan" (fry pan). The whole name means simply, "My Fry Pan."

店の名前は、「僕のフライパン」っていう。外国語から来た「フライパン」のような言葉なら、普通はカタカナで書いてあるんだけど、この店は全部ひらがなで。

I just thought these little frog sculptures were picture-worthy.

このちっちゃいかえるの偶像は写真を撮る価値があったと思っただけなんだ。

And of course, the restaurant had some of that wonderful fake food out front to entice passers-by.

もちろん、店の前でお客さんを吸い寄せるためのおいしそうな見世物の料理が見えた。

Behold the Japanese take on French toast. This style is fairly common: a super-thick slice of toast with the middle bread cubed, removed, toasted, and put back in with butter, and also honey in this case. It came with vanilla soft-serve, and you could also get a mini "banana sundae" with it. 

見てご覧。これは日本型のフレンチトースト。これは、中々一般的の中が引き出されて、四角の形に切られて、焼いて、戻して、ちょう厚いトーストの一枚。これは、バターもはちみつもかけた。ソフトクリーム付きで、セットなら、ミニバナナパフェーも付くこと。

Yep. They got Friendly's beat.

うん。アメリカの「フレンドリーズ」っていう店の負けだ。

This I liked because it has a lot of more traditional Japanese desserts. From the top, clockwise: Matcha ice cream parfait, sakura mochi, mitarashi dango, Ohagi/Botamochi, Kuzu mochi, and a daifuku.

これは、私が好きなところが伝統的な日本料理のお菓子が食べれること。

But what's so special about this place? Well, let's look inside.

Why yes. Yes indeed. 

はい、いかにも。

私が選んだのはこのシリーズ。もしかして読めなかったら、もうひとつのヒント言ってあげよう。

Surely you've got it now. Boy was this nostalgic. 

分かったでしょう？すっごく懐かしかったよ！

For lunch, Yuri ordered the pork shougayaki (ginger grilled) and I ordered nattou kimchee pasta. 

ゆりちゃんは豚肉しょうが焼きにして、私は納豆キムチーパスタにした。

And this is my pasta.... of FAIL.

これは、私のパスタ。。。やばかったよ！

Yes, this pasta was teh suck. It failed to mention on the menu that it was cold. Which in and of itself, I'm not against. But with the slimy texture of the nattou and the kimchee.... it just didn't work. I ate about two bites of this and gave up. I think it's the first time I've ever had something here I disliked enough to not eat it. I had to remedy this sad situation, so I got....  

そう、このパスタは不味かったんだ。メニューで冷たいままでとは書いてなかったし。冷たい麺類は大体、文句言わないけど、この場合、納豆とキムチーの組み合わせはなんか、ぬるぬるで最低だった。一口しか食べられなくて、すぐに諦めた。食べられないほど不味い料理は日本に来て初めてだったのかもしれない。「こんなにがっかりしている状態を直さなきゃ」って思って。。。

The mega honey toast. This, this was awesome. Pure awesome. It more than made up for the terrible pasta.

。。。でっかハニートーストを食べた。先のと違って、これは旨かった。パスタを十分に償ったよね。

After lunch, we went back to Yuri's place and watched Arietty. As per most of Miyazaki's movies, it's a really cute, interesting movie and I highly recommend it. The one problem was that whoever wrote the subtitles decided to translate "ningen" not as "human being", but "human bean." I kept laughing every time it came on screen. I couldn't help it. 

食事が終わってから、ゆりちゃんのうちに帰って、アリエティーを見た。宮崎の映画のとおりに、すごく可愛くて、面白くて、かなり勧めますよ。字幕の何度も出た間違いが唯一の問題だった。その間違いは、「人間」と言ったとき、「Human being」じゃなくて、「Human bean」（人間の豆）っていう訳語が出ちゃったこと。見ると、つい吹き出してしまった。

Then, we started getting ready for the fireworks show. Okaasan was awesome and put the yukata and obi on for me. Then she helped Yuri, too. She did a great job; we looked quite fashionable. Here, see. 

そして、花火大会の準備を始めた。さすがお母さんが浴衣や帯を着てくれた。ゆりちゃんにも手伝ってあげたんだ。やっぱり、私が出来るよりずっと上出来したね。けっこうファッショナブルでしょう？

Since we were all gussied up, on the way to the fireworks, we took some purikura too!

花火大会に行ってついでに、せっかくの浴衣だったから、プリクラをした！

We took some pictures by the harbor too.

And then it was on to the main event, fireworks! Before we took our seats, we got a little snack to hold us over.

そして、花火の出番のところだった！席に行く前に、おやつを買っておいた。

We chose this vendor. Apparently it was "Shangri-la" cuisine.

ここにした。「シャングリラ料理」だそうだった。

We went for these, which I forget the name of. They were chewy, mochi-like bread filled with a beef/potato mash, with chili sauce on top.

この名前が忘れちゃったやつを買った。牛肉とポテトの中身とチリーソースがかけたもちもちなパンだった。

Sorry for the flash; it had magically become nighttime when we got to our seats.

フラッシュはごめんね。座って食べ始めたところは、すでに暗くなっちゃったから。

So now, the grand finale: Fireworks!! This was one huge fireworks show. Some of the blasts were so large and loud that it looked like daytime and I could feel the reverberations deep in my chest cavity. Have a look-see. 

じゃ、その日のマインだった！これは、なんてすごい花火が見えたんだ！心臓で来たほど音が大きくて、太陽見たいに見る方を照らした花火だったよ。ほら、見て。

The shiny thing in the center is the moon.

Yes, they had heart-shaped fireworks.

うん、ハートの形のもあった。

And during the finale...

フィナーレに進んだら。。。

It was like the sun exploded. Incredible. 

太陽が爆発したみたい。すごかった。

Why don't we have fireworks like this in America? It's kind of a shame we only think of fireworks on July 4th, instead of all summer-long like the Japanese. 

アメリカでこんな花火大会がないのは、どうしてだろう？花火は七月四日だけの物だと思われているのが、ちょっと残念なぁ。日本なら、夏中の物だから。

Anyway, afterwards, we stopped at a Lawson and bought some belated dinner. I got an ume onigiri and a nattou one. This time, the nattou was quite tasty. Yay!

とにかく、終わったら、時間が遅かったけど、ローソンによって、晩御飯を買った。私は、梅のおにぎりと納豆のおにぎりにした。今回は、納豆がおいしくて、よかった！

We also tried to watch Caspian before going to bed, but both Yuri and I fell asleep in the middle. Hey, we were tired.

寝る前に、カスピアン王子のDVDを見ようと思ったけど、途中でゆりちゃんも私も、寝ちゃった。ちょう疲れてたんだよ。

Anyway, the post for day three will be considerably shorter. And might involve omuraisu.

とにかく、三日目のポストは多分、これより大分短く書くんでしょう。オムライスも出るかも。
