Awa Odori '11

So in August there was the Awa Odori in Tokushima city. It's a festival and dance that is one of the most famous throughout Japan. And it's a great chance for me to get some real "matsuri" experience in, so I went. And took pictures, of course.
八月には徳島での阿波踊りの祭りが行われた。日本全国で一番有名な祭りの一つなんだ。本物の祭りの経験をするチャンスだったから、行ってみた。もちろん、写真も撮った。

Like the first thing you see when you come out of the station.

駅を出ると、最初の見える物。

Pink is a common component of the Awa Odori women's yukata.

ピンクは一般的な阿波踊りの女性の浴衣の一部。

Men tend to favor blue.

男性なら青い色にする傾向がある。

But there are unisex ones as well, in this case purple.

モノセックスのもある。この場合は、むらさき色だ。

This one is selling "ringo ame," or apple candy. Kind of exactly like candy apples

これは、りんご飴を売っている。キャンディーアップルとちょっと、そっくり。

This one isn't selling food, but goldfish. It's a game where you try to see how many goldfish you can net. The ones you catch, you keep.

ここ、売っているのは、食べ物ではなくて、金魚だ。金魚を捕まえてみるっていうゲーム。捕まえた金魚を持って帰っていいだからね。

This stand is selling "yaki toumorokoshi," or grilled corn. 

この店は、焼きとうもろこしを売っている。

Baby castella! Castella is a common fair food. It's a dairy-less sponge cake that originally came from Portugal. You can find it in most stores.

ベービーカステラ！カステラは一般的な祭りのお菓子なんだ。元にポルトガルから来た乳製品なしのスポンジケーキ。どこでも買えるもの。

A couple more shots of girls in the unisex Awa Odori yukata. I call this version the "fisherman's" yukata. It's so much more practical than the long one with the geta.

またのモノセックスの格好の浴衣。私はこれを、「漁師」の浴衣と呼ぶね。長くて、下駄が付いているのよりずっと着やすいでしょう。

Anyway, it was fun times. I think I want to buy an Awa Odori yukata now, haha.

だからね、楽しかったんだ。今は、なんか、阿波踊りの浴衣を買いたいと思うんだけどね、ハハ。
