Essentials for a Japanese Summer. 日本での夏の必需品

Rice plants getting steadily taller and taller. The hum of cicadas roaring in your ears. Succumbing to the heat and cranking up the AC. These are some of the myriad things you will experience during a summer in Japan. How to survive these muggy, humid days? Well, here are a few things that you just cannot be without.

稲が徐徐高くなっていくこと。蝉の声が耳に届いて唸っていること。暑さで折れて、クーラーをつけてしまうこと。日本の夏では色々な経験のいくつかなんだよ。「こんな蒸し暑い日々はどうやって凌げばいい」って考えているの？ほなら、そのために使ったらいい道具について教えてあげようね。

First, the ubiquitous uchiwa fan. Be careful with the name though. It is only the fans that look like these that are called uchiwa. The fan that folds up is called "sensu". Uchiwa are a must-have when the days get long and the temperature rises. Whether walking around or on a crowded train, they're perfect for keeping cool.

まずは、普遍的な団扇です。しかし、呼び方は気をつけてね。こんなふうに見えるのだけが「うちわ」っていうのだ。折り畳めるのは、「扇子」っていうファンだからね。団扇が長くなってきている温度も上がってきている日にばっちりのマストアイテムだ。歩いていっても、込んでいる電車に乗っても、冷やせるように便利な物よ。

Japanese shaved ice, called "kakigoori". This comes in a variety of flavors, mostly fruit-based, like strawberry, lemon, melon, etc. You can also get condensed milk drizzled over it. There are more traditional Japanese-flavored versions too, with matcha, azuki beans, and mochi. I plan to eat a metric crapton of kakigoori this summer.

次は、かき氷です。かき氷は、色々な、たいていにフルーツの、味がある。例えば、苺、レモン、メロンなど。練乳をかけてもらうことも出来るよ。その他、抹茶、小豆、餅をを使って、もっと伝統的な種類もあるね。今年、私は、かき氷を百万キロぐらい食べようと思ってるよ。

At a loss for something to do on those sultry summer nights? We in America often think of fireworks as being something appropriate for the 4th of July, but not really much else. In Japan, fireworks are a common activity all summer long. When I studied in Kobe, we went out to the river and played with fireworks just for the fun of it. I have a hole burned in my messenger bag to prove it.

There are many other things to try out, or participate in, during the summer in Japan. Various festivals for one. The big festival Tokushima is known for is called the "Awa-odori". Dancing it looks something like this:
