So, Meri came to visit me in Anan this past weekend. We did lots; frankly, more than I expected to. But some things we wanted to do were nixed by inclement weather. But let's start from the beginning, eh?
この前の週末、メリが私に会いに阿南に来てくれたんだ。色々やったよ。正直に言うと、期待してたより色々。それなのに、最初からやりたかったとしても、ひどい天気で出来なくなっちゃったこともあった。でも、始まりから始めようか？
On Saturday, around 3:30, I picked Meri up from Anan station. I had managed to arrange a spare bike for her to use, so getting back to my apartment wasn't a problem. It was super hot, though, so we stopped for some refreshments at the patisserie across the street from the bike shop. I forgot to take pictures, but Meri got a peach tart, and I got milk pudding with mixed fruit. They were perfect and refreshing.
土曜日に、三時三十分ごろ、阿南駅でメリを迎えに行った。三日間の貸し自転車を予約しといたから、駅からアパートまで買えることは問題にならなかった。でも、ごっつ暑かったから、ちょっと自転車屋の向かいのケーキ屋さんでお菓子を食べて休憩しちゃった。写真は、取るのを忘れちゃったが、メリが桃タルトで、私がミックスフルーツのミルクプリンを食べた。暑さにバッチリで、すっきりした。
After dropping stuff off at my place, we went to the kaitenzushi place in a nearby town. We went by bike, and it was so hot we were red-faced and sweating by the time we got there. We thusly resolved to linger until the sun set, so the ride back would be more pleasant! It was delicious, as usual. I tried a lot more of the meatless options, like eggplant and ume-shiso. And of course, I love my natto sushi.
うちで荷物を置いておいてから、隣の町の回転寿司のところに食事しに行った。自転車で行って、着いたら顔が赤くなっていて汗も勝てたほど暑かったよ。だからこそ、帰る道がもっと涼しく乗って行けるように、夕日になるまで、出来るだけゆっくり食べようと思った。相変わらす、美味しかった。今度は茄子にぎりや梅しそ巻きみたいな肉も魚もなし種類を食べてみた。納豆の軍艦巻き寿司が大好きよね。
The next day, had plans to meet one of my teachers, Okino-sensei. After she picked us up, we went for lunch. Because Meri'd never been to Tokushima before, we wanted her to have something special to the region. So, we decided on "tarai udon." Udon are thick wheat noodles, and "tarai" is the special wooden tub they serve them in. We got lunch sets with tempura, tofu, pickles and rice as well. Oh, and watermelon for dessert!
次の日は、同僚の先生の一人の沖野先生に会う予定だった。沖の先生が車で迎えに来てくれてから、昼ご飯を食べに行った。メリは、初めて徳島にきたので、徳島の名物の食べ物を経験させてあげたいと思って、「たらいうどん」にした。うどんっていうのは、暑い麦粉の麺類で、「たらい」は、丸い入れ物の名前なんだ。定食で天ぷら、豆腐、漬物、ご飯ももらった。あっ、デザートとして西瓜も付いた！

Then, we went to see some of a play put on by students from my main school. The plot was about 9 people aiming to pass a placement exam for university, and the weird final "test" they had to go through together. Anyway, it was pretty interesting.
そして、私の主な高等学校の演劇部の上演を見に行った。大学の推薦入試をめぐる９人の受験生の話で、選ばれてもらえるように、一緒に受けなければならなかった変な最後の「テスト」ってこと。とにかく、けっこうおもろいと思った。
The glowing, Jesus-like figure is an "Ohenro-san", a pilgrim who travels to temples around Japan.
光っている、イエズスみたいな姿は、日本を旅行する巡礼の「お遍路さん」って言う人だ。
After the play, we went to see Mt. Bizan, the biggest mountain in Tokushima. We took lots of pictures!
その後は、眉山を上りに行った。写真をいっぱい取ったんだ！

Before dinner, we also stopped at a museum about a classical form of puppet theater in Tokushima, "Ningyo Joruri." The puppets themselves are pretty impressive pieces of work. It takes three or more people to work a single puppet.
晩ご飯の前に、徳島県の伝統的な「人形浄瑠璃」っていう文楽について博物館を見に行った。人形そのままで、大変印象的なものだったよ。人形の使い方では、人が三四人もかかることだよ。

The next day, the beginnings of a typhoon were apparent, but we decided to take the train to Tokushima city and just shop and hang out. In Tokushima city, we had sushi, went to the Awa Odori Center, and managed to kill quite a bit of time just wandering around.
次の日は、台風の始まりが見えたけど、徳島に汽車に乗っていって、ショッピングとか遊びとかしようと思ってた。徳島で、寿司を食べたり、阿波踊り会館に行ったり、ぐるぐるしたりして可也時間を潰しちゃった。

It was a great time. Getting Meri home was a bit of a task (remember, typhoon), but she got there eventually. And it was worth it having her over. Next time, I'll be going to Ishikawa, we decided.
楽しかったなあ。メリの帰り道はちょっと大変になったけど（台風だったと言ったでしょう）、結局帰られた。それなのに、メリと遊び甲斐があったんだよ。今度は、私が石川県に行くと決めたね。
