Observations of a high school ALT on Japanese kids learning English. 高校のALTの日本人の学生が英語を勉強することにすいて実体験。

So, I've been teaching in Japan for about a year now, right? In that time, I've seen a fair number of students and come to expect certain kinds of mistakes from them. As far as how the kids themselves approach English, however, I've noticed two major problematic trends.

一年間ぐらい日本で教師の仕事をしてきたね。その間、教えた生徒が多くて、生徒がどんな間違いをするかとは、ある期待にもなってきたんだ。しかし、生徒の英語についての考え方は、邪魔な動向が二つあると思う。



1. They make English more complicated than it actually needs to be.

    実際に必要があるほどより、英語を煩雑にしてしまうこと。

2. They think English is not at all the same as Japanese.

  英語は、日本語と一緒のところが絶対にないと思ってしまう。


Of course, there are many influencing factors that make speaking English tough for students. The Japanese style of language education for one thing. But that's a topic for another time.

もちろん、生徒にとって、英語を話すのが難しくする影響は色々あるでしょう。日本型の言語教育を始めに。でも、それは、別の話なんだ。

So what happens because of these trends? Well, because of the first one, you get those situations where you ask a student what should be a simple question, or make a simple request, and they do naught but stare at the floor, silent. Or maybe blurting out random words. They're convinced they don't have the knowledge to formulate a proper answer, so they struggle and wrack their brains and struggle some more, and finally come up empty. I can't tell you how many times I've had the following kind conversation. () means that part is in Japanese.


Me: How was lunch?


Student: I.... was..... (uhmm.. uh... er..... )..... taste was agreeable........ volume too high.....(what the hell is the word for "full"????) ...remains... many!


Me: Ok, ok, like this: 'It was good. But it was a lot, so I was full, and I didn't finish."


Student:....................................(oh.)

じゃ、その影響で、どんなことになる?それはね、一つ目の所為で、生徒に簡単なはずの質問したり、簡単なお願いしたりして、お返しに、生徒が黙っって下に見ることだけ。それとも、無作為な言葉を使って答えてしまうかもしれない。自分の知識が少なくてとても答えられないと信じていって、どれほど必死に言葉を思いつこうとしても、やはり何も出てこない。次のような会話を、言えないほど、何度もしたんだ。

私:How was lunch?

生徒: I.... was..... ええと...あの.....ええ....taste was agreeable........ volume too high.....仲いっぱいって、一体何だろう??...remains... many!

私:Ok, ok, like this: 'It was good. But it was a lot, so I was full, and I didn't finish."

生徒:....................................あっ。



Stuff like that. Or more simple things, like instead of just saying "It's blue," they say "Its color is blue," adding in unnecessary words and such.

そんな感じ。その他、もっとシンプルな言い方にも出る。例えば、ただ「青いです」だけの変わりに、「色は青いです」と言って、無用な言葉とかを入れる。


So then we come to the second point. Japanese kids don't realize how word-for-word translating from Japanese to English can be. They think English is such an alien, incomprehensible language that they are really surprised when they find similarities.

続いて、二つ目のポイント。日本人の生徒は、日本語から英語に訳すのがどこまで逐語的に出来るかと気付かないと思う。英語なら、絶対に日本語と違う言語だと生徒が思うので、一緒の所見つけたら、本当にびっくりする。

For example, there is a whole class of nouns-as-verbs in Japanese. Basically, you take the noun and add "suru" (to do) to it to make it into a verb. For example, to do laundry is "sentaku suru", with sentaku being the word for laundry. It's pretty much the same as English, isn't it? Also that it's ok to leave out words in casual speech. When responding to the question "How are you?", they think they must say all the words "I'm fine, thank you. And how about you?", when they can just say "Fine. You?" It's exactly like the Japanese response, "Genki yo. Anata wa?"

例えば、日本語では、動詞化されている名詞がたくさんある。詰まり、名詞に、「する」っていう動詞をつけて、動詞になる。例として、日本語で、「To do laundry」って言うのは、「Laundry」っていう「洗濯」を使って、「洗濯する」になること。英語とそっくりなんじゃない?そして、カジュアルな話では、ある言葉が言わなくてもいいことも。「How are you?」って質問の返事は、生徒が「I'm fine, thank you. And how about you?」の全体言わなければならないと思ってしまう。実は、自然な言い方がよく「Fine. You?」になるよ。日本語での「元気よ。あなたは?」ってお返しと、またそっくりでしょう。

Are there ways in which Japanese and English are very different? Of course. But when the kids let that idea overwhelm them, and when they think they have to construct grossly complicated sentences, it's no wonder that lots of students just give up on the idea of speaking natural, easy English. As a teacher, I try to use simple English and keep it as close as possible to Japanese. I think they gain a lot of confidence in themselves when they can easily understand what I say.


日本語と英語が非常に違うところもあるの?それは当然でしょう。しかし、学生がそのように考えて諦めたり、複雑すぎる英文を作ろうとしたりしたら、自然な英語はどうせに無理から、もうどうでもいいって思ってしまうに決まっている。英語教師として、シンプルで日本語と同じような英語をできるだけよく使うことにしている。私の言うことが分かりやすくて、もっと自信を持っていくと思うんだから。
