Mindi in Osaka, Round Two, Day One

So, I finally got Mindi back to Osaka for a proper, non-jet-lagged visit. We arrived around 2 in the afternoon, and first had to scout out our hotel. The first time, we'd stayed at a hotel that was actually attached to Osaka station, so no "finding" was required. This time, I booked at a place about 10 minutes away. BUT. Osaka station and its environs are both massive and labyrinthine (more on this for day three!), so somewhere described as ten minutes away could actually take an hour to find if you don't know the way. In the going, however, I grabbed a few choice photo opportunities. Behold.

ついに、時座ぼけしてないミンディを、ちゃんと楽しめるように、大阪に連れて行ってあげました！午後二時頃ついて、最初には、ホテルを探す必要だった。ミンディの来日の時なら、大阪駅に実際に付いているホテルで泊まったから、見つけることがなかったんだ。でも、今度は、歩いて行って１０分ぐらいかかったところの予約だった。ケドね。大阪駅とその周辺が広くて、しかも迷路みたいので、１０分ぐらいかかると言っても、場所よく分からないと、見つかるのが一時間もかかるのかもしれないよね。探しているついでに、いい写真を撮ることが出来て、うれしかったけどね。見てご覧。

 

This hotel's name is just unfortunate in English. For the record, "kinki" is another way to say "kansai," the term for the area of Osaka/Nara/Kyoto as a whole. 

このホテルの名前は、不運なことだよ。（（英語の同じような発音の「Kinky」って言葉は、「変態」って意味だからね））これからの為の知らせに、大阪・奈良・京都をまとめて、「関西」のまたの言い方の「近畿」です。

This pig restaurant was funny. Because it's a pig. 

この豚のレストランは面白かった。豚だから。

I'm preeeeeeetty sure this hotel was of the skeevy sexy variety. Despite the innocent-looking Christmas motif.  

これ、やらしいラブホテルなのは、ほぼ確かだと、私は思っているけど。クリスマスのモーティフで怪しくないような見た目なのに。

Eventually, we found our hotel, checked in, and just recuperated for a bit. Then TEH HUNGAR hit (I just got deja vu writing that sentence...). We decided to wander about one of the (many) "shopping towns" that litter the backstreets of Osaka. Shopping towns (my own term) are basically the guts of the city, the areas in the small alleys between buildings on a block. They're cramped, crammed full of vendors, restaurants, etc., and a hell of a lot of fun to explore.

結局、ホテルに着いて、チェックインして、ちょっと休憩にした。でもすぐに、めっちゃくちゃお腹が空いていて、大阪の裏道のどこでもある「Shopping towns」に行ってみた。Shopping towns（私の造語）って言うのは、古本的に市の腸って感じで、主な建物の間の道なんだ。狭くて、込んでて、店いっぱいで、そこにグルグル探検するのがごっつ楽しいと思うよ。

Anyway, food! This is the place we settled on.

とにかく、食べ物！ここに決めた。

This place is called "Shinsekai Jan Jan" It's an izakaya style joint, meaning you order at least one drink, and many smaller plates of food from a diverse menu.

名前は、新世界ジャンジャンって。居酒屋だから、飲み物を少なくても一品で、色々な料理のメニューで注文することだ。

We got... 

私たちが注文したのは。。。

Osaka-style, "negiyaki" okonomiyaki. Instead of the typical thick, mayo'ed presentation, this version was thinner, and full of sliced scallions instead of cabbage. It reminded me a bit more of a Korean jeon than your standard okonomiyaki. 

大阪のネギ焼き。普通の厚くて、マヨをかけているお好み焼きじゃなくて、これは薄くて、キャベツの代わりにネギいっぱい入ってた。食べて、韓国の「ジェオン」って言う料理 を思い出した。

These aren't potato french fries; they're gobou french fries. The gobou (burdock) root is more fiberous and chewy than a potato, but apparently it makes kick-ass fries.

これは、フライポテトじゃなくて、フライゴボウだよ。ゴボウがポテトより、堅いけど、かなり美味しいフライが出来るとは初めて知った。

This was a fall special: creamy mushroom stew. Mushrooms are thought of as an autumn seasonal food, and most places have a mushroom-based limited time offering this time of year. So yeah, this thing was creamy, chocked full of mushrooms and in a crispy bread bowl. What's not to love?

これは秋限定の料理。きのこクリームシチューだ。きのこは、秋の季節の食べ物と思われているから、秋になったら、こんなスペシャルな料理はなかなか一般的だね。とにかく、クリーミーで、きのこがあって、サクサクパンに込まれていて、好きじゃない所もない、これ。

After eating, we just wandered and looked around. We'd meant to go see Nara, but between being tired and being hungry, another long trek just didn't appeal. Plus the shopping towns are good at eating up your free time. 

食べてから、グルグル歩いたり物を見たりしただけ。奈良まで行こうと思ってたけど、疲れたりお腹空いたりして、やっぱりまたの長い旅を辞めといたんだ。その上に、Shopping townsでは、暇を潰しやすすぎるから。

As a last, amusing thing, it seems that penguins are somehow associated with Italian food. Hey, don't look at me like that; I have no idea. 

さいごに面白いことに、何となく、ペンギンがイタリア料理と繋がっているそうだ。その顔しないで。私も知らんからね。
